Former Alabama football standout Christion Jones is the new head coach at Paul Bryant High School.
The school announced the move Friday morning.
Jones replaces John McKenzie, who was approved last week as the new head coach at Vigor.
The 31-year-old Jones played high school football at Minor and was a wide receiver and kick returner at Alabama. During his four years playing for the Crimson Tide, which ended in 2015, Jones caught 85 passes for 1,030 yards and seven touchdowns. He also had three punt returns for scores and two kickoff return touchdowns.
Jones helped Alabama to national titles in 2012 and 2013 and was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2013. He was a practice squad member for the Miami Dolphins in 2015 and 2016 and played in the Canadian Football League for Toronto, Saskatchewan and Edmonton.
The Stampede went 3-7 in McKenzie’s only year in Tuscaloosa with wins over Minor, Northridge and Brookwood. They lost their final three games of the season to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, Bessemer City and Demopolis.
Paul Bryant has struggled on the football field since its first season in 2003. The Stampede has never won a playoff game (0-6). The team’s last playoff appearance -- and last winning record (7-4) -- came in 2019.
Jones is the seventh head coach in program history. He spent last year coaching special teams and track and field at nearby Central High School.
